What to Expect After Your First Juvederm Treatment

As we age, our skin gradually produces less collagen and we lose some of the healthy fats that support our skin’s tight and voluminous appearance. This gradual process leads to the typical signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles, and a tired or less “full” appearance. While there are a variety of factors that can accelerate this process, like sun damage and stress, we’re on a mission to reduce and prevent the signs of aging with the safest and most effective filler solutions available.

Known as a Juvederm treatment, we use the power of dermal fillers to restore the healthy and supple appearance of the skin. Made from synthetic hyaluronic acid (hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in the body), this skin-supportive filler instantly provides improved tightness and volume, while simultaneously promoting new collagen production within the skin.

Unlike Botox injections that typically last about 3-4 months, Juvederm can provide noticeable skin improvements for up to 18 months before another treatment is required. Typically, we reevaluate our clients 12 months after the first treatment to ensure the best results for our patients.

How the Juvederm Treatment is Performed

After determining the best treatment option for your skin, our dermatologist in the Doylestown, PA area gently applies the dermal filler with a needle or blunt-tipped cannula. We prefer to use the blunt-tip cannula to reduce the risk of damage to surface structures like underlying veins (this can cause more redness and swelling). With the cannula, we can treat several areas with only one entry point, allowing for a less painful process and a faster recovery time.

For more precise dermal filler applications, only then will we use a traditional needle to apply the filler with greater accuracy. With this traditional method of application, more entry points are required, and slight redness, swelling, and bruising are more common.

Whichever method of injection our dermatologists decide is best for your skin, you can expect our experienced dermatologists to work with care and precision to maximize your comfort and prevent as much bruising and swelling as possible.

After Treatment Skin Care

It’s completely normal to experience slight redness and swelling at the treatment site, and it should reside about 24-48 hours after your visit. If you were treated with the cannula process mentioned above, you may be able to return to normal activity immediately after treatment with no obvious signs of treatment. If you do experience any swelling, redness, or discomfort, you can gently apply a cold compress or ice pack to the treatment site for 10-15 minutes throughout the day.

Before treatment, it’s also important to mention that you should avoid excessive alcohol consumption and over-the-counter blood-thinning medications like aspirin because they can cause excessive bruising. In addition, improperly administered dermal filler can result in irreversible skin damage and other unsightly issues; this procedure should always be performed by a licensed cosmetic dermatologist in Southampton, PA that approaches every procedure with experience and care.
